How do pay-as-you-go SEO and AEO audit platforms compare?
Three ways to pay for audits
There are three common models. Free official tools, such as Google Search Console, Lighthouse, PageSpeed Insights and the Rich Results Test, cost nothing and show how Google itself reads your site. Subscription platforms charge a monthly or yearly fee for a bundle of tools and limits. Pay-as-you-go SEO platforms sell credits and charge for each audit you run, with no monthly fee.
The right model depends on how often you audit. A small business owner who checks the site after a redesign, a content push or a drop in traffic may only run a handful of audits a year. A subscription charges for every month in between. An agency auditing client sites daily is in the opposite position.
What to compare between pay-as-you-go SEO platforms
- Cost per run for the audits you will actually use, not the cheapest tool on the price list.
- Whether credits expire, and whether there is a minimum top up.
- Whether each audit fetches your live page at the time you run it.
- Whether every finding shows the evidence behind it, so you can tell a real problem from a false positive.
- Whether the platform states its claims carefully. Google's guidance says good advice either qualifies its claims as opinion based on data or experience, or backs them up with official Google guidance.
What AEO and GEO audits can honestly check
AEO and GEO are names for optimising for AI answers. Google's guide to its generative AI features says optimising for them is still SEO. It says you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, that there is no special schema.org markup to add, and that there is no need to break content into tiny pieces.
Google's guidance on third-party SEO tools lists AEO and GEO tools among services to think critically about, and says third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking data. Its guide to generative AI features adds that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. So an honest AEO audit checks what you control: whether AI and search crawlers can reach your pages, whether the content clearly answers the questions people ask, whether structured data matches the page, and whether your business details are consistent. It should not promise that you will be cited.
For measuring results, Google points to the generative AI performance report in Search Console, which is free.
How AI Web Page SEO compares
AI Web Page SEO is a pay-as-you-go platform. There is no subscription: you top up credits and pay per run, and most single page tools cost 49p. Larger audits cost more, such as the WCAG 2.2 Accessibility Audit at £2.49. Every audit fetches the live page when you run it and shows the evidence behind each finding.
Our AEO Checker reports on things you control on the page, and it does not claim to guarantee AI citations. Use it alongside the free Google tools, not instead of them. Frequently asked questions
Is pay-as-you-go SEO cheaper than a monthly subscription?
It depends on how often you audit. If you check a site a few times a year, paying per run usually costs less than a monthly fee. If you audit many sites every week, a subscription can work out cheaper. Count the runs you actually need in a typical month and compare the totals.
Can an AEO tool guarantee my site appears in AI answers?
No. Google's guidance on third-party SEO tools names AEO and GEO tools among services to treat with caution, and Google's guide to its generative AI features says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. An honest AEO audit checks things you control, such as crawler access and clear content, and does not promise placement.
