Where can you find llms.txt and markdown generators for AI search?

28 October 2026 · By John Carlsson
The proposal's own site, llmstxt.org, lists llms.txt and markdown generators: platforms and plugins that generate the file, including Yoast SEO, AIOSEO, Wix, Mintlify and GitBook, plus code libraries. Online generators and auditors can build one from a live site. Google says its Search does not use llms.txt, so treat it as a help for AI agents, not a ranking factor.

What llms.txt and markdown pages are

llms.txt is a proposal by Jeremy Howard, first published on 3 September 2024 and hosted at llmstxt.org. It describes a Markdown file at the root of a site that gives AI agents brief background, guidance and links to more detailed Markdown pages, so they can find the important information in one place. llms.txt and markdown generators build these files for you.

The proposal also asks sites to offer a clean Markdown version of each page at the same address, either with .md added (page.html.md) or with the extension replaced by .md (page.md), using index.html.md or index.md for pages without a file name. That is what a markdown generator produces: the readable text of a page, without menus, scripts and layout code.

Where to find llms.txt and markdown generators

The llmstxt.org page lists the main sources, so start there rather than with search results:

If your site is not on one of those platforms, an online generator can crawl your live pages and build the file and the Markdown copies for you. Whichever you use, check the result by hand: a generator only knows which pages exist, not which ones matter most to your visitors.

What a valid file needs

Under the proposal, the only required part is an H1 with the site or project name. It can be followed by a blockquote summary, some short detail without headings, and H2 sections containing lists of links written as [name](url), each optionally followed by a colon and a note. A section called Optional holds links an agent can skip when it needs less context. A generator that produces a different structure is not following the proposal.

What Google says, and what UK sites are doing

Google's guide to optimising for its generative AI features says you do not need new AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, that Google Search ignores llms.txt files, and that an llms.txt file will neither help nor harm your rankings. Its documentation updates page records this note being added on 15 June 2026. Other AI tools and agents may still read the file, which is the reason to keep one accurate if you publish it.

Adoption is uneven. Our study of 5,011 UK websites found that 24.76 percent of sole traders publish an llms.txt file, against 11.16 percent of big brands, and that five of the eight AI files we checked existed on none of the sites.

Checking and generating your own

Our LLMs.txt Auditor checks an existing file against the proposal's structure and can generate one from your live site, and our Markdown Generator produces a clean Markdown copy of any page. Each costs 49p a run, pay as you go.

Frequently asked questions

Does llms.txt help my Google rankings?

No. Google's guide to optimising for its generative AI features says Google Search does not use llms.txt files, so keeping one will neither help nor harm your visibility or rankings in Google Search. The file is aimed at AI agents and tools that choose to read it.

What must an llms.txt file contain?

Under the proposal at llmstxt.org, the only required section is an H1 with the name of the site or project. It can then have a short summary in a blockquote, some detail without headings, and H2 sections listing links in the form [name](url), with an Optional section for links an agent can skip. Check that output from llms.txt and markdown generators follows this structure.
