How do automated website audit tools compare for technical professionals?
Ask how the tool gets its data
The most useful question to ask of automated website audit tools is where their findings come from. A tool that reads a cached copy of your page, or a database collected weeks ago, can report problems you have already fixed. A tool that fetches the page live, at the time you run it, reports what a visitor or crawler sees now.
The second question is whether it runs the page's scripts. Many sites build their content, links and structured data with JavaScript. A tool that reads only the raw HTML will miss content that appears later, and may report missing headings or links that are in fact there.
The third is lab versus field data. Google's PageSpeed Insights documentation explains that lab data comes from a controlled test and is useful for debugging, while field data reflects real users. A tool that reports only lab figures for speed is showing you one test run, not your visitors' experience.
Judge the evidence, not the score
Every tool builds its own score from its own checks, so a 72 in one tool and an 85 in another tell you nothing on their own. Google's guidance on third-party SEO tools says these tools do not have access to its internal ranking data, and that some data shown by third parties is misread as coming from Google.
What matters for a technical user is the evidence behind each finding: the exact element, header, URL or value that failed, the rule it failed, and how to reproduce it. If a tool cannot show you that, you cannot tell a real problem from a false positive.
Also check whether results can be exported, whether there is an API, how many pages it crawls, and whether it respects robots.txt and crawl limits on sites you do not own.
Check automated website audit tools against the free official tools
- Google Search Console: indexing, Core Web Vitals, rich result reports and the URL Inspection tool, using Google's own view of your site.
- Lighthouse: an open source tool that audits performance, accessibility, SEO and best practices, run from Chrome DevTools, the command line or PageSpeed Insights.
- PageSpeed Insights: Lighthouse lab results plus real user field data for INP, LCP and CLS.
- Rich Results Test: what Google reads from your structured data.
- MDN HTTP Observatory: security headers, HTTPS redirection and related protections. Its own FAQ says a top grade is not a security guarantee, because there are many things it cannot test, such as outdated software or vulnerable plugins.
Run your chosen paid tool and these free tools on the same pages. Where they disagree, the paid tool should be able to show you why.
Where our tools fit
AI Web Page SEO fetches every page live at the time you run an audit, runs the page's scripts where the check needs the finished page, and shows the evidence for each finding. Our Security Audit uses scoring built to mirror the HTTP Observatory and adds DNS, SPF, DKIM, DMARC and known software vulnerabilities. Tools are pay as you go, with most single page checks at 49p. You can see the full set on the audit tools page.

Frequently asked questions
Why do automated website audit tools give my site different scores?
Each tool chooses its own checks and its own weighting, so scores are not comparable between tools. Google also notes that third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking data. Compare the individual findings and their evidence instead, and check anything important against Google's own tools.
What is the difference between lab data and field data?
Google explains that lab data is collected in a controlled environment and is useful for debugging, while field data captures the real experience of actual users. PageSpeed Insights uses Lighthouse to produce lab data and shows field data for Core Web Vitals: INP, LCP and CLS.
