A backlink is a link on another website that points to yours. Every time another site links to you, that's a backlink, and together they make up your site's "backlink profile." Most site owners have no idea what's in theirs, because these links sit on other people's websites, not your own. This tool goes and finds them for you. Put in a domain and it pulls that site's backlinks and lays them out clearly.
Here's what you get back, in plain terms. Total backlinks is how many links point to the site. Referring domains is how many separate websites those links come from — ten links from one site is very different from ten links from ten different sites, and this number tells them apart. The dofollow / nofollow split matters because a dofollow link passes on a little of the linking site's credibility to you, while a nofollow link is more of a mention that passes nothing — knowing the mix tells you how much of your profile actually carries weight. And you get your top 100 links ranked by how strong the linking site is, so you can see at a glance whether your best links come from solid, well-known sites or from weak, obscure ones.
Why look at any of this? Mostly to understand your own site. It shows you who is actually linking to you, whether those links are worth anything, and whether your profile looks healthy or thin. It's also a genuinely useful way to learn: you can run it on a site in your field that's doing well and see what a strong, natural backlink profile actually looks like, which helps you understand what you're aiming for. And it's the natural first step before the toxic-link check below — you can't sensibly judge whether you have a bad-link problem until you've seen what your links actually are.

Good backlinks help you. When a decent, real website links to you, Google reads it as a sign your site is worth trusting, and that can help you rank. But not every backlink is a good one, and some do the opposite. Spam blogs, fake directories, hacked pages and "link farms" all link out to sites automatically, and some of those links end up pointing at you whether you asked for them or not. You usually never created them and often don't even know they exist — spammers and bots add them on their own, or an old cheap SEO company built them years ago and left them behind.
Here's the honest bit most tools won't tell you: Google already ignores the large majority of that junk on its own. If a spam site links to you, most of the time nothing happens, and you don't need to do anything about it. So if your site isn't ranking, bad backlinks usually aren't the main reason. Weak or thin content, a slow or badly built site, or simply strong competition are far more common causes, and worth ruling out first.
But Google doesn't catch everything. A concentrated pile of clearly toxic links, or links a dodgy SEO company built for you years ago, can genuinely hold a site back. The catch is you can't tell which situation you're in by guessing, because you usually can't even see these links. That's the only real reason to look: not to panic, but to check whether you've got a genuine problem or nothing to worry about.
Each backlink gets a spam score, a number from 0 to 100 showing how dodgy the linking site looks. Near 0 is clean, 30 or higher is getting toxic. If only a few of your links score high, you almost certainly don't need to act. If a lot of them do, that's when it's worth dealing with.
And if you do have a problem — how you fix it
You can't make spam sites remove their links. What you can do is give Google a list of them and tell it to ignore them. This is called disavowing, and it's done with a free tool from Google. Once those links are ignored, they can't count against you. Building that list by hand is fiddly, and if you get it wrong you can disavow good links and make things worse.

This is a fair question, and it trips a lot of people up. The honest answer is that Google mostly ignores bad links on its own now, but "mostly" isn't "always", and the disavow tool exists to cover the gap. It also survives partly for historical reasons. Here's the full picture.
The tool was built for a different era. It arrived in 2012, straight after Google's "Penguin" update. Back then Google actively punished sites for bad links, and spammy link-building was everywhere, so site owners genuinely needed a way to tell Google "I didn't build those links, please don't penalise me for them." At the time the tool was essential. Google's ability to simply ignore bad links, rather than punish you for them, came later and got a lot better over the years. So part of the answer is just that the tool has stuck around from a time when it really was needed, and Google hasn't removed it — although it has said it might one day.
The other part is that "ignored automatically" was never a cast-iron guarantee. Google's own wording is that it ignores the large majority of spammy links. That still leaves a minority it doesn't catch, or is slow to catch. The disavow tool is the manual backstop for those, and there are a few specific situations where the automatic system isn't enough:
1. Manual penalties. If an actual human reviewer at Google looks at your site and issues what's called a "manual action" for unnatural links — you'd see it flagged inside Google Search Console — then the automatic ignoring doesn't apply. A person has stepped in and marked your site, and the only way out is to clean up those links and disavow them. This is the one case where even Google tells you that you should use the disavow tool.
2. Links you know were built to game rankings. If you, or an SEO company you hired in the past, deliberately built manipulative links, you might choose to disavow them up front to avoid a penalty, rather than sit and hope Google's system ignores them. If you know the links are dodgy because you know how they got there, waiting isn't always the comfortable option.
3. Negative SEO attacks. This is rare, but it happens: a competitor, or someone with a grudge, deliberately points a large volume of toxic links at your site to try to drag it down. Google has become good at spotting and ignoring this, so most attacks do nothing. But if you're on the receiving end of a serious one, disavowing is a way to protect yourself rather than just trusting the automatic system to handle it.
So the two ideas fit together like this: the automatic ignoring handles the everyday junk, which is why most sites never need to disavow anything at all. The tool exists for the exceptions — mainly manual penalties and links you know were manipulative — where "usually ignored" isn't good enough and you need to tell Google directly. Think of it like a smoke alarm that mostly resets itself: most of the time you never touch it, but it's still there for the times it doesn't sort itself out on its own. That's exactly why it's worth checking your links rather than either panicking or ignoring the whole subject — so you know which situation you're actually in.
