Hey Tony Audit False Positives and Errors

A full examination of the incorrect, misleading and unsupported findings in four HeyTony reports. Each disputed claim is examined against the original report and the independent evidence preserved during the investigation.

What this investigation covers — and what it does not

This page is not a promotional overview and does not repeat HeyTony findings that the independent checks confirmed as correct. It concentrates on demonstrable false positives, inappropriate requirements, reporting errors and conclusions for which the original reports did not supply sufficient evidence.

Different levels of certainty matter. A proven false positive is contradicted by direct evidence. An inapplicable warning may correctly describe a missing feature but incorrectly classify that feature as required. An unsupported claim lacks the evidence needed to prove it; that does not mean the underlying fact is necessarily false. The sections below preserve these distinctions rather than manufacturing stronger conclusions.

Audit one — SEO compliance: false positives and misleading warnings

The HeyTony report awarded 86/100 and reported two failures and eight warnings. The independent investigation established two unequivocal false-positive warnings: a supposedly missing privacy policy and a claimed count of only four internal links. It also identified several local-business assumptions inappropriately presented as general requirements, a misleading Search Console verification warning and an analytics claim that the available tests could not prove.

Why the reported finding is wrong or misleading

A page cannot be correctly classified as absent when its public URL responds successfully and is linked from the site. A checker confined to a small sample, a single guessed path or a brittle link selector can miss an existing page. The warning is contradicted by the measured site response.

Consequence for the site owner

An owner could waste time building a duplicate privacy page, create competing versions or unnecessarily alter navigation.

Correct test and reporting standard

Resolve privacy links in the rendered page; follow redirects; request the destination; record HTTP status and URL. Distinguish absent page, inaccessible page and missing homepage link.

Limits of this conclusion

HTTP 200 establishes public availability at test time, not a legal assessment of policy completeness.

Internal links miscounted as four

Only four internal links on the homepage; warning about inadequate internal linking.

What the independent evidence shows

The independent homepage audit counted 52 internal anchors leading to 26 distinct internal URLs.

Why the reported finding is wrong or misleading

The reported number four is incompatible with both observed counts. Anchor instances and unique destination URLs are different measures, but neither yields four in the recorded inspection. A parser that ignores script-rendered navigation or sections can undercount links.

Consequence for the site owner

An incorrect low count could drive unnecessary menu edits, duplicate links and poor prioritisation of actual SEO work.

Correct test and reporting standard

Report page URL, whether the DOM was rendered, the total anchor count, deduplicated internal destinations, and inclusion rules for navigation/footer links.

Limits of this conclusion

Counts are a snapshot and can change after deployment.

Search Console meta-tag absence treated as verification defect

Google Search Console verification meta tag missing.

What the independent evidence shows

The meta tag was absent, but a Google site-verification DNS TXT record was present. The same HeyTony report separately passed the GSC DNS verification check.

Why the reported finding is wrong or misleading

Google supports multiple ownership verification methods. Absence of one optional method is not evidence that ownership verification is missing. Reporting it as a deficiency while passing DNS verification creates a misleading impression and an internal inconsistency.

Consequence for the site owner

May prompt unnecessary meta-tag additions or incorrect claims that the site cannot use Search Console.

Correct test and reporting standard

Separate “HTML meta method not used” from “ownership unverified”. Check DNS, HTML file, Analytics and other supported methods as applicable; confirm actual account status where authorised.

What the independent evidence shows

No tel: link was detected, but the audited site is an online SEO software service, not necessarily a local telephone-first business.

Why the reported finding is wrong or misleading

The absence of a telephone link is a true observation, but presenting it as a universal SEO fault applies a local-business conversion convention without demonstrating that the site offers telephone enquiries. An observation is not automatically a defect.

Consequence for the site owner

May pressure the owner to publish a telephone number that is not part of the service model.

Correct test and reporting standard

Determine business model and contact channels first. Treat a telephone link as a recommendation only where telephone contact is offered and relevant.

Limits of this conclusion

The observation of no tel: link remains correct; the error is in applicability and severity.

Why the reported finding is wrong or misleading

Local citation consistency is a local SEO concern. A web software product is not necessarily expected to display a street address and telephone number in a local-business format. The checker failed to establish the prerequisite before assigning a warning.

Consequence for the site owner

Could encourage unnecessary disclosure of address details and irrelevant changes to the site.

Correct test and reporting standard

Classify the organisation, target market and local-search intent before applying NAP completeness rules. Distinguish corporate contact information from local service-area listings.

Limits of this conclusion

Not proof that every possible contact detail exists; rather, the requirement is not justified for this business.

Why the reported finding is wrong or misleading

Google Business Profile is designed for eligible businesses that make in-person contact with customers. It is not a mandatory SEO asset for every website or SaaS provider. The checker has converted an optional, eligibility-dependent feature into a general fault.

Consequence for the site owner

Could drive attempts to create an ineligible listing or distort SEO priorities.

Check business eligibility and local customer interaction before recommending a profile or a link to it.

There is no universal requirement for a website to embed Google Maps. A map can be useful for visitors to a physical premises, but for an online SEO application it can add little value and extra page weight. Absence is not an SEO defect without a relevant physical location use case.

Why the reported finding is wrong or misleading

Schema types should describe the actual entity and page. SoftwareApplication and Organization are appropriate to an online software service. Marking the lack of LocalBusiness as a failure can encourage inaccurate markup.

Consequence for the site owner

Incorrect structured data may misrepresent the business and complicate rich-result validation.

Validate the present schema and its factual correspondence to the content; recommend LocalBusiness only if the entity genuinely meets that type.

Limits of this conclusion

The absence of LocalBusiness is a correct raw observation; the error is calling it a defect.

Analytics failure not established by the tests

What HeyTony reported

No analytics tracking detected; install Google Analytics or Tag Manager.

What the independent evidence shows

Analytics-related code was present in /index-head.js. Browser checks saw no GA/GTM requests in tested sessions, but did not establish the consent path or execute all relevant states.

Why the reported finding is wrong or misleading

A negative network observation in a limited session cannot establish that analytics is absent across consent states or other analytics systems. Conversely, code presence does not prove events are actually sent. The test supports an inconclusive verdict, not a definitive failure.

Consequence for the site owner

A false failure can lead to duplicate tracking, while an uncritical pass can conceal broken tracking.

Test a fresh browser session with consent accepted and rejected; inspect script load, event delivery and analytics destination; distinguish GA/GTM from other platforms.

Overall SEO score 86/100 based on 33 passes, eight warnings and two failures.

What the independent evidence shows

The report does not disclose the scoring weights or adjustment rules. At least two warnings are proven false positives and several others are business-model-inappropriate.

Why the reported finding is wrong or misleading

Without a published weighting scheme, a reader cannot calculate how much each wrong warning affected 86/100 or reproduce the score. Presenting a precise number without its calculation method weakens audit accountability.

Consequence for the site owner

A user may treat a non-reproducible grade as objective and prioritise irrelevant remediation.

Correct test and reporting standard

Publish weights, input values, exclusions, and scoring rules, or describe the score as proprietary and non-reproducible.

Limits of this conclusion

The numerical score may follow an internal algorithm; lack of disclosure is not proof of arithmetic error.

How the SEO findings were verified

Read-only server checks inspected live HTTP responses, the homepage link graph, DNS verification records and the available structured data. Browser checks examined mobile and desktop rendering, with Lighthouse 13.5 outputs preserved separately. The final 43-check comparison mapped each HeyTony line item to a recorded observation. This section includes only the ten findings where the original warning or its interpretation was incorrect, misleading or not established.

Two important boundaries remain: analytics must be tested through consent-state transitions before a firm absence verdict, and the proprietary 86/100 score cannot be recomputed without HeyTony’s weights. Neither limitation justifies calling every original finding false.

Audit three — unlinked mentions: wrong entity, misleading counts and erroneous outreach

The original report is headed aiwebpageseo.com — “sass”. It states that it found 300 brand mentions, checked 27 existing backlinks, identified 193 pages already linking and produced 106 unlinked mentions. It then supplies a sample email thanking publishers for mentioning “sass” and asking them to link to AIWebPageSEO.

Proven wrong-entity error: “sass” is not the brand AIWebPageSEO. The listed URLs visibly concern Sass stylesheets, people named Sass, Sass & Belle merchandise, game files, other businesses and unrelated phrases. Failure 1 — incorrect search target

A brand-mention audit must search for the actual brand name, recognised variants and domain, then check the context to distinguish the brand from unrelated homonyms. This report instead searched a generic word that is heavily associated with the Sass CSS preprocessor and unrelated names. The matching rule therefore fails before backlink checking begins. A page about Sass programming cannot be assumed to know AIWebPageSEO simply because both contain letters that may resemble an acronym.

Failure 2 — unsupported opportunity count

The reported 106 is an output count, not 106 verified references to the business. The summary numbers also do not reconcile arithmetically on their face: 300 minus 193 equals 107, not 106. Failure 3 — outreach message based on a false premise

The sample email says that the publisher mentioned “sass” and thanks them for including “us”, then asks for a link to aiwebpageseo.com. On the plainly unrelated examples, that assertion is false: the publisher was writing about something else. Sending the suggested message could damage credibility, waste time and create unsolicited outreach to unrelated people.

How a valid unlinked-mention audit should work

  1. Search for “AIWebPageSEO”, “AI Web Page SEO”, the site domain and verified brand aliases — not “sass”.
  2. Open each candidate URL and capture the exact sentence containing the brand.
  3. Check the entity identity in context and exclude unrelated people, programming languages and product names.
  4. Inspect the source page for existing links to the target, including redirects and canonical variations.
  5. Report a verified count with the URL, excerpt, date, link status and outreach rationale for each entry.
