Why has my website traffic suddenly dropped, and is AI killing website traffic?

15 October 2026 · By John Carlsson
Most sudden drops trace back to a Google ranking update, a crawling or indexing fault, a security issue, a manual action, a site move, or people simply searching less. Compare date ranges in Search Console's Performance report to find which pages and queries fell. On AI, Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode link to websites, and its documentation gives no figures on lost traffic.

The usual causes

Google's own guide to debugging traffic drops lists the main reasons a site loses Search traffic:

How to find the cause in Search Console

  1. Open the Performance report and set the Date filter to Last 16 months. This shows whether the drop is a yearly pattern you have seen before.
  2. In the Date filter, open the Compare tab and choose Compare last 3 months to previous period, or Compare last 3 months year over year.
  3. Click through the Queries, Pages, Countries, Devices and Search appearance tabs. A drop limited to one section, one country or one device points to a different cause than a site-wide fall.
  4. In the Pages table, sort by Clicks Difference to see which pages lost the most.
  5. If the drop is site-wide, open the Page indexing report. If it affects specific pages, inspect them with the URL Inspection tool.
  6. Check the Manual actions and Security issues reports, and the Crawl stats report.

Google treats average position as a secondary signal. Clicks and impressions tell you more.

Check whether demand changed

Filter the Performance report to one of your main queries, then look up the same term in Google Trends. If searches for that term fell everywhere, the problem is demand, not your site. To see whether a ranking update or a Google system issue lines up with your drop, check the Google Search Status Dashboard, which reports the status of crawling, indexing, ranking and serving.

Is AI taking your traffic?

Google's documentation does not give figures for how AI features change traffic to websites, so be careful with anyone who quotes one as fact. What Google does say:

So if your clicks fell while impressions held steady, look at the generative AI report alongside your normal data before drawing conclusions.

If a manual action or spam concern is on your list, our Google Spam Policy Audit checks a site against Google's spam policies one by one.

Frequently asked questions

Should I change my site as soon as traffic drops?

Not before you know the cause. Google's guide suggests comparing date ranges in the Performance report, checking the Data Anomalies page to rule out reporting errors, and looking up your main queries in Google Trends to see whether demand fell. If the drop matches a seasonal pattern or a fall in searches, changing your pages will not bring the traffic back.

Can I see AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?

Yes, in part. Google says traffic from AI features is included in the Performance report under the Web search type. Search Console also has a generative AI performance report, available to all sites since 31 August 2026, which shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, date and device. It may not appear if your site has too few impressions.
