How do I show up in ChatGPT answers?

15 October 2026 · By John Carlsson
Allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler in your robots.txt and make sure your firewall or CDN lets its published IP addresses through. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, and blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of search answers. Inclusion is not guaranteed: ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors, so clear, useful pages still matter.

Step 1: allow OAI-SearchBot

OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is the crawler used for search, to surface websites in ChatGPT search. Sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI's publishers FAQ says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, and that to be included in summaries and snippets you should not block OAI-SearchBot.

Open your robots.txt (at the root of your domain, for example example.com/robots.txt) and check there is no rule blocking it. If you want to be explicit, add a group like this:

Also look for a blanket User-agent: * group with Disallow: /. Under the robots.txt standard, a crawler with no group of its own follows the * group, so a blanket block would cover OAI-SearchBot too.

Step 2: check your firewall and CDN

OpenAI's ChatGPT search help page says a site must allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl it and must let traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses reach it. OpenAI publishes the list at openai.com/searchbot.json.

If you use a CDN, web application firewall or a security plugin with bot blocking, add an allow rule for those addresses. A robots.txt allow is no use if the request is rejected before it reaches your site.

Step 3: understand the other OpenAI bots

OpenAI runs more than one user agent, and each one is controlled separately in robots.txt:

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt update for search results to reflect the change.

Step 4: make pages worth citing, and keep the ones you do not want

OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors and placement is not guaranteed. It does not publish those factors, so there is no official checklist beyond crawler access. What you can control is that each page answers a clear question in readable text, without the answer hidden behind scripts, logins or images.

If there are pages you do not want surfaced even as a link and title, OpenAI's FAQ says to use a noindex meta tag, and the crawler must be allowed to crawl the page so it can read that tag.

Step 5: track the visits

OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs. In Google Analytics 4, go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and look for chatgpt.com as the session source. That shows whether people are actually clicking through from ChatGPT answers.

You can also test by hand: ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, with search on, and open the Sources list to see which sites it cites.

For a structured review of whether a page answers its question clearly, the AEO Checker on this site can help before you start testing prompts.

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking GPTBot stop me appearing in ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI says its robots.txt settings are independent. GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train its foundation models. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler for ChatGPT search. You can disallow GPTBot to opt out of training and still allow OAI-SearchBot so your pages can be shown and cited in ChatGPT search answers.

How long does a robots.txt change take to affect ChatGPT search?

OpenAI says it can take around 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its systems to adjust for search results. If you have just unblocked OAI-SearchBot, give it at least a day before testing. Also check that your firewall, CDN or security plugin is not blocking requests from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses, because that blocks the crawler even when robots.txt allows it.
